While a lucky few are born with naturally perfect teeth, the vast majority of people will develop an orthodontic problem at some point in their lifetime. At Lindsey Orthodontics, we're proud to help people in Griffin and Locust Park overcome these issues and achieve healthy smiles through comprehensive orthodontic treatment. But many patients ask us: is there a way to prevent orthodontic problems? The answer is complicated, but we're here to shed some light on the subject.

Can Orthodontic Problems Be Prevented?

Generally speaking, it's not possible to prevent orthodontic problems on your own. Most orthodontic problems, or malocclusions, are genetic, and they arise due to the structural development of the teeth and the jaw. However, while you may not be able to prevent malocclusions entirely, there are a few things you can do to limit their severity.

The first is to correct two habits that some kids form: prolonged thumb sucking and tongue thrusting. Prolonged thumb sucking refers to thumb or finger sucking that continues beyond age 4, while tongue thrusting is a pattern when a child pushes their tongue into their teeth while swallowing. Both of these habits place pressure on the front teeth, eventually causing them to tilt forward in a condition called openbite. Seeking early orthodontic treatment can help easily stop these habits, preventing an openbite from developing.

Second, it's important to have your child evaluated by your Griffin orthodontist right around the time they turn 7. We may not start treatment this early, but evaluating at this age allows us to see potential future problems and monitor your child's growth until the ideal time for treatment. Without early evaluation, it's possible for orthodontic conditions to take a turn for the worse that requires extensive treatment later on.
