Am I Too Old For Orthodontic Treatment?

Am I Too Old For Orthodontic Treatment?
Posted on 02/06/2023

Children are commonly recommended for orthodontic treatment, so we tend not to think as much about adults needing it. But, the truth is, you're never too old to see your orthodontist. Orthodontic treatment can be just as successful for adults as it is for kids. Little-known fact: one in three orthodontic patients is an adult!

Here at Lindsey Orthodontics in Griffin and Locust Grove, GA, we work with people of all ages. What's more, we offer free consultations to help come up with the best possible treatment plan for you.

Adult Teeth Can Be Moved

Permanent 'adult' teeth can still be moved to accommodate and align. No matter your age, your teeth still experience the same physiological response to force. The thing is, your bone is denser than it is in childhood teeth, so treatment can take a little longer to be effective.

Differences in Treatment For Adults

As an adult, your teeth are no longer growing. That's the key thing to keep in mind with your treatment. Your bones have matured and become denser. You might also have missing teeth, worn-down teeth, fillings, or some sort of dental disease. These things are more common in adults.

Luckily, your orthodontist  will work in conjunction with your regular dentist to coordinate your care plan. Other specialists can be called upon as needed, such as oral surgeons. Oral surgery is more commonly needed for adults than children.

How the Treatment Process Works For Adults

Aligners or braces will be put on to apply the force necessary to move your teeth into place. Treatment is comfortable, and a lot of options make it so that your aligners or braces are difficult to notice. A lot of adults can use clear aligners (Invisalign or Spark) or even ceramic braces, and your orthodontist will go over which type of device is going to work best for your teeth.

Length of Treatment

On average, orthodontic treatment lasts for about 22 months. You will need to visit your orthodontist every eight to ten weeks during that time to keep up with your treatment. Given the results, this amount of time is a small but important investment.

During this time, your orthodontist can help you address your concerns and figure out if any additional things (such as removing a tooth to create more room for your teeth to become better aligned) need to be done.

Whether you get clear aligners or ceramic braces, you are never too old for orthodontic treatment!
